# Furniture measurements: what to check before buying

A piece of furniture has more than one relevant size.

A piece of furniture has more than one relevant size. There is its overall footprint, the space needed to use it, the room around it and the route required to deliver it. A successful purchase checks all four. Begin with a simple measured room record and the exact product reference. Do not assume a category name, showroom impression or attractive photograph gives enough information to place an order.

## Record the room as it exists

Sketch the room and label wall lengths, openings and fixed elements. Note the position and operation of doors and windows, as well as any feature that affects furniture placement. Use a consistent unit and mark approximate dimensions clearly. If a purchase depends on a close fit or custom fabrication, arrange the supplier’s required professional verification. A homeowner’s sketch is a useful briefing tool, but it should not be treated as the final manufacturing survey when that has not been agreed.

## Separate product dimensions from useful dimensions

Ask for overall dimensions and the dimensions relevant to use. A bed frame may extend beyond its mattress; a sofa’s arms reduce its usable seating width; a wardrobe’s outside size does not describe every internal compartment. Read the drawing for the exact configuration. If accessories, handles or legs change the footprint, include them. Compare the product in the state you will actually order rather than combining measurements from similar variants or a display sample.

## Draw the operating space

Show doors swinging, drawers opening, chairs pulled out and extendable parts in use. Add the person performing the action and the route others need to pass. A storage bed should be checked in its opening state; a desk needs the chair and ordinary working position. Do not rely on a universal clearance copied from another room. Ask the designer or supplier to verify the arrangement against the actual product and the users’ needs.

## Measure the delivery route

Record the entrance, relevant turns, stairs and lift constraints, then ask the supplier how the product is packed and delivered. Package dimensions may differ from assembled dimensions. Confirm whether components are designed to separate and who assembles them. Give the delivery team the information it requests before paying for an item with uncertain access. IKEA’s customer-service information refers to product assembly instructions; use the actual model’s documentation rather than assuming every piece can be dismantled conveniently.

## Check relationships between purchases

Measure the table with its chairs, the bed with bedside units and the sofa with serving surfaces. If you buy in phases, reserve the space for later pieces on the plan. A first purchase that uses all available width may make the next essential item impossible to place. In a hypothetical bedroom, choosing the bed before checking wardrobe access can create a conflict even when both pieces individually fit. Compare the room as a complete system of activities.

## Keep a verified purchase record

Create a short record with product code, dimensions, configuration, room position and delivery confirmation. Attach the supplier’s drawing or product sheet and mark who verified critical measurements. If the specification changes, update the record rather than keeping an obsolete screenshot. Ask for professional review where installation or fixing requires it. The aim is not a complicated survey file; it is enough reliable information to ensure the ordered item is the same one you assessed in the room.

## Your practical checklist

1. Use one unit and label approximate measurements.
2. Check overall, usable and operating dimensions.
3. Include adjacent furniture and later purchases.
4. Confirm package size and the complete delivery route.
5. Keep product references and critical measurement approvals.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the product width enough to decide if it fits?

No. Depth, height, opening space and surrounding activities can be equally important. Check the complete arrangement and delivery route before committing.

### Can a phone photograph replace measurements?

It can explain context, but should not be treated as verified dimensions. Use labelled measurements and arrange professional checking when the purchase or fabrication depends on accuracy.

### Who should measure custom furniture?

Agree responsibility with the fabricator and designer before ordering. The person accepting manufacturing dimensions should verify the site information required by that system and scope.
