# Sheer or blackout curtains: choose layers for daylight, privacy and sleep

Choose sheer, light-filtering or blackout curtains with a room-by-room day and night test. Plan independent layers, edge coverage and practical fabric care.

Choose curtains by deciding what the window must do at different times, before choosing the fabric colour. A living room may need daylight during breakfast and privacy after sunset; a bedroom may need both an open daytime view and a darker setting for rest. One fabric does not have to serve every purpose. For a home in Al Ahsa, Hofuf or Mubarraz, use the actual window and household routine to decide whether a sheer layer, a denser curtain or two independently operated layers make sense. This guide helps you define that choice without promising a universal blackout percentage or a particular energy saving.

## Understand the four descriptions on the fabric label

Sheer, light-filtering, room-darkening and blackout describe different light-control intentions. IKEA's curtain guide separates these categories: sheer fabric softens incoming daylight, light-filtering fabric reduces its intensity, and denser options serve stronger darkening needs. Treat that as a useful vocabulary for the supplier discussion, not a universal test standard shared by every brand. Ask what the exact offered fabric is intended to achieve. A heavy appearance, a dark colour or the word luxury does not identify its performance. Keep the fabric reference with its stated function so a later colour substitution does not silently change the light-control choice.

## Write three scenes for each room

Describe morning, the brightest period when you use the room, and the evening with the lights on. For each scene, answer three questions: do you want to see outside, how much incoming light is comfortable, and who could see in? A hypothetical family living room might need a view during breakfast, reduced screen glare in the afternoon and greater privacy during an evening gathering. A guest bedroom used only occasionally may have a different priority from a bedroom occupied by someone resting during daylight. These are planning examples, not assumptions about every Saudi household. Record the actual routine before ordering all windows in one fabric.

## Check evening privacy separately from daytime appearance

Do not approve privacy while looking only from inside a brightly lit showroom. IKEA's Saudi STENFRÖ information explicitly notes that shapes can remain visible through the sheer during daytime and that the illuminated interior can be visible at night. This is a documented example of why a daytime impression cannot certify evening privacy. Arrange a sample review at home with the normal room lights on, using only a viewpoint you can access legitimately and safely. Avoid recording neighbours or private interiors. If the sample fails your privacy requirement, consider an additional opaque layer rather than simply selecting a darker shade of the same sheer.

## Give each layer a job and an independent movement

A two-layer arrangement is useful when the preferred daytime and evening settings differ. Write the jobs down: the inner layer manages the daytime view and light; the other layer provides the stronger closure required later. IKEA's Saudi curtain range illustrates pairing thinner curtains with blackout options for this flexibility. Ask the installer to demonstrate opening one layer while leaving the other closed. Decide where each gathers when open and whether that bundle obstructs a window handle or useful daylight. If one suitable curtain already meets every agreed scene, an extra layer may add cost and cleaning without solving another need.

## Distinguish light through the fabric from light around it

When reviewing a proposed blackout solution, identify where any unwanted light enters. Is it passing through the fabric, appearing at the centre opening, or visible around the top, sides or bottom? Discuss those observations with the supplier before changing the fabric. A fabric description alone does not specify the installed edge coverage. Ask for the proposed overlap and edge arrangement on your actual window, coordinated with the selected track or pole. Avoid applying a universal overlap dimension to every installation. For a room where darkness matters, agree a practical review at the relevant time of day instead of accepting a photograph taken under unrelated lighting.

## Try the room from its normal seats

Review the sample from the sofa, desk or bed rather than only beside the glass. With the television or work screen in its normal position, compare the open window, the lighter layer and the denser layer. Record whether a reflection remains and whether the room becomes darker than you wanted. A curtain should not be expected to resolve every conflict between a window and a screen; adjusting the layout may be worth discussing too. Keep this as a household comfort trial, not a certified glare measurement. Repeat the useful scene after installation so the acceptance decision follows the original need.

## Approve the fabric together with its care routine

Ask for cleaning instructions for each layer and any lining, and establish how it will be removed and rehung. Do not transfer a washing instruction from one fabric to another. STENFRÖ, for example, has its own washing, shrinkage and hemming guidance; that does not establish the treatment for a coated blackout fabric. Discuss who will handle large or difficult-to-reach curtains and what the supplier includes. Judge the sample's colour beside your retained finishes as a separate step after its function is suitable. Keep a labelled sample or reference photograph and the product code, rather than relying on the word beige in the order.

## Turn the chosen scenes into an order the installer can follow

For each window, list the required daytime and evening settings, selected fabric references, number of independent layers, gathering direction and agreed coverage details. Have quotations identify fabric, lining where used, track or pole, fittings, installation and any alteration separately enough to compare the same scope. There is no reliable single metre price without knowing what is included. Keep the measurement and operating-mechanism decisions coordinated with this selection, using the related guides below. Bunyady can discuss the curtain layers alongside your room layout and finishes so a visually consistent scheme also supports the way the home is used.

## Your practical checklist

1. Define morning, bright-period and evening settings for each window.
2. Confirm the actual fabric category and product reference.
3. Review privacy with the room lights on.
4. Give each additional layer a distinct purpose.
5. Separate fabric transmission from gaps around the installation.
6. Keep care instructions and agreed coverage with the quotation.

## Frequently asked questions

### Can sheer curtains provide privacy at night?

Do not assume that they can. Check the exact fabric with the room illuminated and add an appropriate opaque layer if the required privacy is not achieved.

### Must blackout curtains be black?

No. IKEA's Saudi range includes blackout options in several colours. Select by the exact product's stated function and your sample review, not by the colour name alone.

### Does every window need two layers?

No. Two independently operated layers are an option when the daytime and evening requirements differ. If one suitable covering meets all agreed scenes, another layer may be unnecessary.
